Special Appeal: Support United Nations Relief Efforts In the Global Compact spirit of shared responsibility for a better world, participants may wish to consider supporting United Nations relief efforts through the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). CERF is the United Nations central donation facility, collecting contributions year-round to help ensure that funds are on hand to allow for immediate relief in emergencies. CERF is funding operations to assist those impacted by the crisis in Syria, the drought in the Sahel, and Hurricane Sandy in the Caribbean, as well as in other countries where life-saving assistance is urgently needed. Organizations or individuals interested in contributing are encouraged to make a donation or learn more about CERF. Please contact cerf@un.org for more information. |

1. Critical Role of Corporate Sustainability Recognized at Sustainia Award Ceremony
Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the winner of the Sustainia Award (11 October, Copenhagen), a new global award honoring innovative, sustainable solutions and ideas. British Azuri Technologies wins the award for their Indigo solar solution for homes in the developing world. The technology allows residents to install small solar panels paid for with scratch-cards. Prior to the Award Ceremony, the Sustainia Action Forum convened international leaders to discuss action strategies for implementing the world’s top sustainable solutions. During this event it was emphasized that while corporate sustainability is now a global movement, urgent action is needed to make it a transformative force for change. More.
2. European Local Networks Forge a Path Forward for Corporate Sustainability
Hosted by the Local Network Serbia and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, Global Compact Local Networks in Europe convened a regional meeting (19 October, Belgrade). Key topics addressed during the two-day meeting included outcomes from the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum, the post-2015 development framework and latest initiatives of the UN Secretary-General. 3. Shift in Company-Investor Briefings to Include ESG Information
Marking a major shift in communications between companies and investors, the Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) held their second call in the ESG Investor Briefing Series (24 October, New York/London). The initiative is designed to improve company-investor communications on ESG information, and improve the ability of financial markets to properly value sustainability performance. More.
4. BASD Urges Action to Meet Rio+20 Priorities
Business Action for Sustainable Development 2012 (BASD 2012) released the final recommendations from the Business & Industry Major Group to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development – Rio+20 (4 October, New York). The recommendations put forth a strategic vision for the role of business as the engine for innovation and investment. More.
5. Global Compact Commemorates the First International Day of the Girl Child
On the occasion of the first International Day of the Girl Child (11 October, New York), the Global Compact recognized the important role of business in respecting and supporting the rights of women and children. To mark the event, the Global Compact called on all companies to review the Children’s Rights and Business Principles and the Women’s Empowerment Principles and consider what more they can do to respect and support women's rights and children's rights, including girls. 6. PRME Webinar Held on Business and Human Rights
PRME and the Global Compact convened a webinar on business and human rights (5 October, New York). The webinar was marked by an in-depth discussion of the relevance of human rights to business and implications for management education. The webinar was also an opportunity to assess interest in forming a PRME Working Group on Human Rights.More.
7. Participant Status: New Signatories, COPs and Delistings
In October, 130 companies and 47 non-business stakeholders joined the Global Compact. 80 companies were expelled for failing to communicate on progress. The largest companies (by employee number) to join during the month were: Continental AG (Germany), Sequana (France), Harman International Industries, Inc. (US), NongHyup Bank (Korea, Republic of) and Grupo Financiero Santander en Mexico (Mexico).

ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
1. Join a Global Compact Local Network
Come together with peers to advance your organization’s work on sustainability at the local level. By participating in one or more of over 100 country networks, companies have the opportunity to engage with a variety of stakeholders to share experiences and best practices, learn how to better fulfil the annual Communication on Progress (COP) requirement, and explore partnership opportunities.
To participate in a Local Network, contact the Network contact person in your country. Details for all Network contact persons, as well as specific information on the activities of each Local Network, can be found athttp://www.unglobalcompact.
2. Call for Examples: Responsible Business & Investment in High Risk & Conflict-Affected Areas
The Global Compact and PRI are developing a new resource that will showcase actions taken by companies, investors and Global Compact Local Networks to implement responsible business practices in high-risk and conflict affected areas. The resource will serve to inspire companies on how they can support peace when operating in such areas.
Global Compact business participants are invited to submit good practice examples to be considered for inclusion in this resource. Examples should illustrate a specific challenge recently experienced in a high-risk and/or conflict-affected area and the concrete steps the company took to address it. Examples should be submitted according to the template (pdf) by 16 November 2012. For further information, please contact Ms. Adrienne Gardaz (gardaz@un.org).
3. UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights: Corporate Questionnaire
Companies are invited to complete a questionnaire on the topic of business and human rights. The study aims to assess where companies stand regarding their impact on human rights. The study is being conducted by the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, in partnership with the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights, the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Organisation of Employers and the Corporations and Human Rights Project.
All companies are encouraged to complete the questionnaire, which can be accessed here. The deadline to complete the questionnaire is 16 November.
